Whilst the trulli of the Itria valley area are well-known, the Salento area is still underexplored by British holidaymakers and property-seekers, although this is changing and it is becoming known for holiday homes of the rich and famous.

The area, centred on the lovely city of Lecce, is particularly attracted for the quality as well as quantity of its coastline, the Adriatic meeting the Ionian sea at the tip of the heel of Italy's "boot".

You don't have to go far south at all, though, to find good beaches.

San Pietro in Bevagna lies on the Ionian coast, and has good access to Lecce and Taranto. Brindisi is the nearest airport, just under 60km away. It is just south of Manduria, famous for its archaeology and its wine.
